Giacomo Vespasiani

Giacomo Vespasiani founded the diabetes center in San Benedetto del Tronto in 1982, one of the first in the region, and from 1999 to 2015 he was its head. His whole life has been dedicated, in addition to the clinic, to the computer translation of diabetes care needs.

He has contributed to the drafting of all the regional laws on diabetes in the Marches, has 135 publications in national and international journals, has taught in the universities of Perugia and Ancona, since 1982 he has computerized, among the first in Italy, the Diabetology Service of San Benedetto del Tronto, in 2004 he created the first Italian computer network among all the diabetes centers in the Marches: 95% of the Italian diabetes centers are computerized with the chart program he designed on the medical side.

He has been a member of various national committees set up precisely for the fight against diabetes, he has contributed to the drafting of various reports and guidelines to allow patients to better face this pathology.

Former President of the Italian Diabetologists Association, Director of the scientific journal “Me$Dia”, member of the Editorial Board of the American journal “Diabetes Forestcast”, co-founder of DIABETE ITALIA, a consortium between the two major scientific societies in diabetes, Director of the Center National Studies and Researches on Diabetes by the Association of Diabetologists, has patented and created several automated telemedicine and insulin dose calculation software systems to be used on mobile phones even before the advent of smartphones. Today the apps he created for nutrition and diabetes are used by almost ten thousand patients in Italy.

He was called to collaborate in the national study group promoted by the National Telemedicine Center of the Istituto Superiore di Sanità to define the clinical trial methodology of digital therapies. The latest ambitious project he is working on in collaboration with the University of Ancona is the use of artificial intelligence to predict the onset of diabetes complications in one/two years.
